So last night I went to the local library and borrowed some books.
One of them is a book that I have seen information about online but wasn't sure if it would be worth buying.. It's called the Low GI Diet.
Well, I had a bad night where I had a very minor asthma attack - mine consist mainly of a bad cough but it kept me up all night and then when I finally did get some sleep about 6am, the dreams I had were super weird, but that's another story for another time...
Anyway, so I'm home from work today and reading this book and it explains the low GI diet and the impact of this on diabetes like nobody has explained to me previously.
Don't get me wrong, my dietitian has told me what I should be eating and given me a basic idea of why but this book explains things in simple, easy to understand terms and it's like this light bulb has gone off in my head.
Thankfully it also contains a 12 week action plan, including healthy (low-GI) eating plan and exercise. I'm going to continue going to the gym but will take what this book says into account as well. I have the book for 4 weeks and am currently trying to decide if I should go out and buy it or if I should just copy the 12 week action plan onto my computer - this saves paper which a friend of mine will be happy about, but isn't always practical for taking it places.
Anyway, I have 4 weeks to decide so I don't have to do that right now. Thing is, if I do decide to buy it, I then have to find it and I don't want to pay too much so ebay may be the go. Might go look at that now to get an idea of what it might cost..
Okay, I'm outta here for now,

It's been a while...
Well, it sure has been a while since I blogged on here - got the idea to come back from my niece who set up a blog on another site to review movies...
So, what has been happening with me in the last .... months....
I was diagnosed with High Blood Pressure and Type 2 Diabetes in October. I started well on the weight loss and lost almost 10kgs, then I stalled. Currently I've put on a few kgs of that back and am now sitting at about 4.5 - 5 kgs lost.. Not happy about it and have started going to the gym again this week to try and get it kick started - my goal is to lose 20kgs.. Fingers crossed.
In February, I turned the dreaded 4-0!!! Yes, I am that old.. lol.. Seriously I have been dreading that number for the past few years cause I look at what my brother and my 2 younger sisters have and have done and I wonder what I have to be proud of, as I have nothing of what they have. All are married or in long-term relationships, all have kids, all have houses... I have none of that. The most expensive thing I own is my car, and I'm actually still paying that off..
One of my sister's always says that I have travelled, I went and lived overseas (Canada) for a year - but is that really an accomplishment? It might be an experience, but is it as great as having kids or making your mark in the world.
I never did what I wanted to do when I left school and I look at it now and think, I can't afford not to work, so if I decide to do it, it's going to cost heaps (of course HECS would help but I would be in debt then) and to do it part time will take 8 years. By the time I finished the course, I would be nearly 50 and why would anyone hire a 50 year old teacher when there are young, hip teachers straight out of Uni to compete with...
Anyway, I am going to use this blog now, to sort out my thoughts and to document my renewed attempt at losing weight, getting my bp and my blood sugar levels under control and maybe not reversing the diabetes but having it under control as well..
So, give me your support, if anyone knows any decent diabetic recipes then let me know, and keep your eyes on this spot for updates...

Hello 2009..
Well, it's the new year and I hope everyone's Christmas and New Year were wonderful, full of love and presents and kisses and hugs and family and friends.
Xmas day was awesome here. I went skiing (Jason went snowboarding) up at Mt Norquay (not pronounced like Torquay for those at home - it's pronounced Norkway) - which is the closest ski hill to Banff. It is about a 10 minute drive up the hill. I stayed on the magic carpet area (for those who haven't yet read my earlier posts the magic carpet is like a little escalator that has rubber strips along it and it takes you up a small hill where you can go slowly and learn to ski/snowboard). But the magic carpet at Norquay is a bit steeper and a bit longer/bigger than the one at Sunshine.
We were up there for almost 2 hours and it was great. Definitely not something I will ever get to do at home - although I did read on the net that there was some snow in Tassie on New Years Day.
After that we went to Adam & Lorraine's for dinner. Roast Beef and all the trimmings - it was good. We did the present swap - I got a voucher from the local book shop and Jason got chocolates, socks and a hoodie.
All in all, it was a great day.
New Year's Eve I had to work until 9pm. My boss, Colleen, bought alcohol for all of us who worked so we sat and drank until it was time to see the fireworks at midnight. I was very drunk but the night was good.
Anyway, that's about it at the moment - will post again soon.

Weather Permitting...
The next few days are going to be extremely cold here. I have included a link to the local weather page that we use at work and as you can see, figures of almost -40 don't look too good.
Also, at the moment - as of 5pm Friday afternoon there is an extreme winter storm/weather warning on the site for Southern Alberta including Banff. It reads as follows:
WINTER STORM WARNING:
Banff National Park
Issued at 3:47 PM MST FRIDAY 12 DECEMBER 2008
10 TO 25 CENTIMETRES OF SNOW WITH BLOWING SNOW TODAY AND TONIGHT. THIS IS A WARNING THAT DANGEROUS WINTER WEATHER CONDITIONS ARE IMMINENT OR OCCURRING IN THESE REGIONS. MONITOR WEATHER CONDITIONS...LISTEN FOR UPDATED STATEMENTS.
AN INTENSE LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM OVER SOUTHERN BC THIS MORNING WILL MOVE SOUTHEASTWARD THROUGH MONTANA TONIGHT. AN AREA OF SNOW ASSOCIATED WITH THIS SYSTEM IS DEVELOPING IN THE NORTHERN FOOTHILLS THIS MORNING AND WILL SPREAD INTO SOUTHERN ALBERTA THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING. 10 TO 15 CM OF SNOW IS FORECAST ACROSS THE REGIONS BY SATURDAY AFTERNOON WITH UP TO 20 CM OVER HIGHER ELEVATIONS. IN ADDITION, A COLD FRONT ACROSS NORTHERN ALBERTA THIS MORNING WILL DROP SOUTHWARD THROUGH ALBERTA TODAY. BEHIND THE COLD FRONT STRONG NORTHERLY WINDS OF 40 TO 60 KM/H WILL DRAW COLD ARCTIC AIR ACROSS THE PROVINCE AND DROP DAYTIME HIGHS INTO THE MINUS TWENTIES FOR THE WEEKEND. THESE STRONG WINDS COMBINED WITH FRESH SNOW WILL PRODUCE POOR VISIBILITIES IN BLOWING SNOW ESPECIALLY IN SOUTHEASTERN ALBERTA WHERE WINDS GUSTING TO 80 KM/H MAY REDUCE VISIBILITIES TO NEAR ZERO AT TIMES. AS THE TEMPERATURE PLUMETS AND WINDS PERSIST ON SATURDAY, WIND CHILL VALUES OF -35 TO -40 CAN BE EXPECTED.
So, there you go - insane really.
I had to go into work this morning for a meeting ,I left work just after 3pm wearing a Navy Blue Jacket - by the time I got home at about 3.30pm, the jacket was mostly white!!
I'll let you all know how I survive this.. LOL

I went skiing yesterday
and I didn't hurt myself once.
I fell over a few times and my knee that I hurt a couple of weeks ago started hurting but I didn't hurt myself when I fell.
The lesson started on the magic carpet - it's an area where they have this little conveyor belt with rubber on it that takes you up to the top of this very tiny hill where they do lessons and things. But even if you're not having a lesson you can still go on there if you're learning.
So the first thing Lorne taught me was how to turn. Not too complicated and I got turning to my left really quickly but because I hurt my left knee 2 weeks ago, I was favouring it a little and not putting enough pressure on it to execute a proper turn. Once I realised that, I stopped babying it and the turns worked.
Next it was onto just going straight down the little hill. There are some photos on my facebook, I will put the link at the bottom for those of you not on it so you can see.
After practising that for a while, we went up the Strawberry chair and did a run called Dell Valley. Up until getting on the chair lift I had fallen down once, and that was the very first set of turns we practiced so I was quite impressed. Well that didn't last long once we got on the chair.
I fell over getting off the chair, then I fell probly 3 times going down the run. The first downhill part of the run was quite a bit steeper and I panicked and didn't dig my edge in properly and over I went. Then a bit further down, my knee started hurting again and I was favouring it and I fell over twice more in quick succession.
Then we met up with Pat and Jeremy (they both work at the shop too and Pat drove us up there) and they said they were ready to go if we were. Luckily I had said to Lorne at the top of the run that I would be done after that, and I would go sit somewhere warm if he wanted to go do some more runs. Anyway, we went down the last little downhill bit which wasn't as steep as the first but steeper than the practice area and I got down there nicely - Lorne even went so far as to say I did some sweet tight turns and he was quite impressed.
I had so much fun. Today I'm not as sore as I thought I'd be. My calves are a bit tight and my knees are a little sore but as I said, not as sore as I thought they would be. I walked home from the shop and had a hot shower when I got home, so I think that probly helped.
So, after my first full week back at work and a hard day at the ski hill, I was in bed by about 10 last night.
Oh and yes, we are connected to the internet at home now - YAY!!!!!
So, that's the details of my first ski lesson, might be going up again Tuesday. So, take a look at the pics..
