Weather Permitting...

The next few days are going to be extremely cold here. I have included a link to the local weather page that we use at work and as you can see, figures of almost -40 don't look too good.

Also, at the moment - as of 5pm Friday afternoon there is an extreme winter storm/weather warning on the site for Southern Alberta including Banff. It reads as follows:

WINTER STORM WARNING:
Banff National Park
Issued at 3:47 PM MST FRIDAY 12 DECEMBER 2008
10 TO 25 CENTIMETRES OF SNOW WITH BLOWING SNOW TODAY AND TONIGHT. THIS IS A WARNING THAT DANGEROUS WINTER WEATHER CONDITIONS ARE IMMINENT OR OCCURRING IN THESE REGIONS. MONITOR WEATHER CONDITIONS...LISTEN FOR UPDATED STATEMENTS.
AN INTENSE LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM OVER SOUTHERN BC THIS MORNING WILL MOVE SOUTHEASTWARD THROUGH MONTANA TONIGHT. AN AREA OF SNOW ASSOCIATED WITH THIS SYSTEM IS DEVELOPING IN THE NORTHERN FOOTHILLS THIS MORNING AND WILL SPREAD INTO SOUTHERN ALBERTA THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING. 10 TO 15 CM OF SNOW IS FORECAST ACROSS THE REGIONS BY SATURDAY AFTERNOON WITH UP TO 20 CM OVER HIGHER ELEVATIONS. IN ADDITION, A COLD FRONT ACROSS NORTHERN ALBERTA THIS MORNING WILL DROP SOUTHWARD THROUGH ALBERTA TODAY. BEHIND THE COLD FRONT STRONG NORTHERLY WINDS OF 40 TO 60 KM/H WILL DRAW COLD ARCTIC AIR ACROSS THE PROVINCE AND DROP DAYTIME HIGHS INTO THE MINUS TWENTIES FOR THE WEEKEND. THESE STRONG WINDS COMBINED WITH FRESH SNOW WILL PRODUCE POOR VISIBILITIES IN BLOWING SNOW ESPECIALLY IN SOUTHEASTERN ALBERTA WHERE WINDS GUSTING TO 80 KM/H MAY REDUCE VISIBILITIES TO NEAR ZERO AT TIMES. AS THE TEMPERATURE PLUMETS AND WINDS PERSIST ON SATURDAY, WIND CHILL VALUES OF -35 TO -40 CAN BE EXPECTED.

So, there you go - insane really.

I had to go into work this morning for a meeting ,I left work just after 3pm wearing a Navy Blue Jacket - by the time I got home at about 3.30pm, the jacket was mostly white!!

I'll let you all know how I survive this.. LOL

I went skiing yesterday

and I didn't hurt myself once.

I fell over a few times and my knee that I hurt a couple of weeks ago started hurting but I didn't hurt myself when I fell.

The lesson started on the magic carpet - it's an area where they have this little conveyor belt with rubber on it that takes you up to the top of this very tiny hill where they do lessons and things. But even if you're not having a lesson you can still go on there if you're learning.

So the first thing Lorne taught me was how to turn. Not too complicated and I got turning to my left really quickly but because I hurt my left knee 2 weeks ago, I was favouring it a little and not putting enough pressure on it to execute a proper turn. Once I realised that, I stopped babying it and the turns worked.

Next it was onto just going straight down the little hill. There are some photos on my facebook, I will put the link at the bottom for those of you not on it so you can see.

After practising that for a while, we went up the Strawberry chair and did a run called Dell Valley. Up until getting on the chair lift I had fallen down once, and that was the very first set of turns we practiced so I was quite impressed. Well that didn't last long once we got on the chair.

I fell over getting off the chair, then I fell probly 3 times going down the run. The first downhill part of the run was quite a bit steeper and I panicked and didn't dig my edge in properly and over I went. Then a bit further down, my knee started hurting again and I was favouring it and I fell over twice more in quick succession.

Then we met up with Pat and Jeremy (they both work at the shop too and Pat drove us up there) and they said they were ready to go if we were. Luckily I had said to Lorne at the top of the run that I would be done after that, and I would go sit somewhere warm if he wanted to go do some more runs. Anyway, we went down the last little downhill bit which wasn't as steep as the first but steeper than the practice area and I got down there nicely - Lorne even went so far as to say I did some sweet tight turns and he was quite impressed.

I had so much fun. Today I'm not as sore as I thought I'd be. My calves are a bit tight and my knees are a little sore but as I said, not as sore as I thought they would be. I walked home from the shop and had a hot shower when I got home, so I think that probly helped.

So, after my first full week back at work and a hard day at the ski hill, I was in bed by about 10 last night.

Oh and yes, we are connected to the internet at home now - YAY!!!!!

So, that's the details of my first ski lesson, might be going up again Tuesday. So, take a look at the pics..

Temperature..

Just thought I'd write this down so that I remember this

When Jason & I left for work this morning it was -22. The temperature has slowly been going up, currently (at 10am) it is -18 and the expected top today is -10.

Sounds lovely doesn't it?

And the snow is coming down oh so lightly out there - at least I think it's snow - it may be little ice crystals - haven't been out there to check it out yet.

That's it, just wanted you all to know that piece of info so you don't complain about the winter cold in Oz again!!

Finally...

It has snowed. It started last night probably about 9 and when Jason and I got up this morning to go to work, there was a blanket of white - maybe between 3-5cm all over. He had to scrape the ice off his windscreen and brush the snow off the car but it was so beautiful.

There was no wind today - or barely any wind anyway so the walk to work was quite pleasant - at -4 degrees C - my face got a little cold but not unbearable and my feet really weren't cold at all. It's currently -7 but I'm nice and warm at work right now.

Although the next couple of days are going to be quite chilly. Tomorrow is supposed to be a high of -9 and a low of -14, Thursday should be a high of -6 and a low of -20, Friday (for my first ski lesson) will be a high of -2 and a low of -19 with some snow.

Should be fun..
I'll let everyone know how I go once my ski lesson is done - that's if I can walk - I've been warned that my legs are going to be sore in a way they never have been before!!
